An important nutrient for plants is nitrogen. As a macronutrient, nitrogen is required for cellular processes, since it is a constituent of proteins, DNA, RNA, and chlorophyll. Nitrogen exists in soils as ammonium, nitrates, and nitrites, which can easily be absorbed by plants’ roots and later used in the biosynthetic processes to make amino acids. These amino acids form proteins critical for cell functioning such as catalyzing biological reactions, structural functions, and metabolism. Nitrogen is needed to manufacture chlorophyll, a nitrogenous compound, indispensable for photosynthesis — that is, for converting light energy to chemical energy for storage. A deficiency of nitrogen causes retarded growth, necrosis of leaf tissues, and reduced yield of crops. That is why farmers add fertilizers that contain nitrogen to soil. Adequate control of nitrogen containing fertilizers, however, is imperative to avoid contamination of the environment, for example by eutrophication of water bodies, in diverse regions of agriculture and culture all over the globe.
